Johnny Cash Sings “Sixteen Tons”

Listen to Johnny Cash’s live performance of “Sixteen Tons”

Although the Tennessee Ernie Ford version of the song is the best known, Johnny Cash really makes it his own in this performance. A studio version of “Sixteen Tons” can be found on the 1987 album Johnny Cash Is Coming to Town.

“Sixteen Tons” was first recorded by Merle Travis in 1947. Tennessee Ernie Ford’s version was released in 1955 and spent weeks in the number one spot on both the country and pop charts.
